Table Talk: The Kentucky Derby by Tablevogue

In light of American Pharoah making history by winning the Triple Crown this past weekend - we decided to put together a series of entries about one of our favorite reasons to celebrate the second most popular sporting event of the year. Kentucky Derby inspired parties have been on trend this past year and you don’t have to make the trip to Churchill Downs or even Louisville to experience the event. Tablevogue gets you started, plan your own Derby party with amazing food, cocktails, decorations, and games.

Be Your Own Steward: Your Tablevogue, Your Way

Celebrate the South's Favorite Day for Bourbon, Horses, & Fashion - Take your cue from the Kentucky Derby’s logo and decorate with the classic colors. Tablevogue Peacock and Violet compliment the Derby hues just right!

Also an option, grow your event with the Kentucky Derby’s nickname, the Run for the Roses, and decorate with classic flower & red rose color scheme. We loved the idea of pairing our Red Tablevogue with One Kings Lane Silver-Plated Mint Julep CupWhether you use it as a vase, a pencil holder, or even, yes, to serve drinks, a traditional mint julep cup adds a rich glimmer to its surroundings.

Millionares Row: Debry Attire

It just wouldn’t be right to wear jeans and a T-shirt to a Kentucky Derby party, unless you were going for the relaxed, tailgating atmosphere of the infield. Follow Southern Living's Head-to-Toe Kentucky Derby Fashion Guide to dress the part.

Put On Your Drinking Hat: The Classic Mint Julep

Mint juleps are the quintessential Southern cocktail. All you need for this classic version is fresh mint, mint simple syrup, and bourbon. Leftover simple syrup keeps refrigerated about one week and perfectly sweetens iced tea.

Ingredients

3 fresh mint leaves

1 tablespoon Mint Simple Syrup

Crushed ice

1 1/2 to 2 tablespoons (1 ounce) bourbon $

1 (4-inch) cocktail straw or coffee stirrer

1 fresh mint sprig

Powdered sugar (optional)

Preparation

Place mint leaves and Mint Simple Syrup in a chilled julep cup. Gently press leaves against cup with back of spoon to release flavors. Pack cup tightly with crushed ice; pour bourbon over ice. Insert straw, place mint sprig directly next to straw, and serve immediately. Sprinkle with powdered sugar, if desired.
